We collaborated with our film crew and our VFX supervisor to capture animated HDR lighting probes on set, creating a CG replacement workflow that could be used in post-production.

Overview

This process allowed the production team to capture real-world lighting data while shooting live-action vehicle footage. By recording HDR lighting references on location, the VFX team could later recreate accurate reflections, exposure, and environmental lighting for CG vehicle integration.

With accurate HDR and live-action reference, the VFX team can rebuild the lighting conditions in post and create results that match the original footage.

Vehicle Rendering

The focus was to make the CG vehicle feel naturally embedded in the live-action environment. Using captured lighting, camera movement, and location reference, the team could match the vehicle to real road conditions, sunlight, reflections, and motion.

Result

The final workflow gave Toyota a practical way to combine live-action footage with CG vehicle rendering, producing photorealistic running footage with the flexibility of post-production control.
